COURSE Description
Level I. A semi-private, intensive, accelerated orientation for artists focused on participating in the New York City art ecosystem whether you are an NYC resident or live elsewhere.
What are the realities of establishing a career as an artist in New York City? And how to remain
focused and inspired while adjusting to changing social and professional conditions? To
approach these questions we will not only look to what is happening now, but to the evolving
modern art systems that got us here.
Alongside historical and practical fundamentals, we will examine specifically New York’s art ecosystem and its often unspoken rules and protocols. Topics include establishing visibility through a social presence; navigating galleries and exhibitions; self-curating and self-mythologizing; finding your supportive people and collaborative DIY spaces; the NYC loft law and securing the right studio for your needs; pricing artwork appropriately; using social media and the web strategically and for sales; developing sound financial and administrative practices like invoicing collectors and getting paid by galleries; pursuing press, writers and critics; the effective difference between commercial, nonprofit and artist-run spaces; maintaining balance through part-time work while sustaining a serious studio practice; applying for grants and residencies including representing your work and yourself through writing.
Additionally, we will address day to day studio skills likephotographing, logging, storing, consigning, packing, and transporting art.
